The bike was owned by a riding champion who placed in 582 races (circa 1934-1965).
Despite all this eye-catching graphic bling, this frame and matching fork justifiably gives the impression of being highly functional rather than merely flamboyant. The keener eye will immediately notice the lack of pointed and filed external lug work. That’s because Masi‘s ground breaking 3V concept utilized larger diameter tubes which slipped over the reinforced sections of the special lug and bottom bracket castings. The resulting aesthetic is pared right down to the essentials, and shows off the very precise tube cutting talents of the highly skilled craftsmen who brazed these beauties together.
The matching fork features a sloping crown with the Masi name on either side. Twice here, once on the lower head lug casting and across the top of the rear brake bridge, the revered Masi name has been picked out in black enamel. The rear brake cable is guided along the inside of the top tube from beneath, emerging at the upper rear next to a decal of Alberto Masi‘s signature. There is provision for a pair of water bottles, and the front derailleur attaches to a brazed on fitting.
Since the dawn of competitive bicycle racing, Italian frame builders have produced some of the world’s most painstakingly crafted and sought after machines. Of all the Italian brands desired by bicycle aficionados, vintage Masis turn up high or even highest on the list.
One of history’s premiere bicycle artisans, Faliero Masi started his trade after racing professionally in the Giro d’Italia and Milan San Remo races during the 1930s. His competitive experience helped Masi intuit what other racers wanted in their ideal bike while fueling his own desire for perfection among other builders.
Cicli Masi’s roots go back to Faliero Masi, who commenced making bicycle frames at the Vigorelli Velodrome in Milan in the 1950s, after a career as a professional racer and team mechanic. Many well-known and successful professional cyclists of the era rode Masi bikes, such as Antonio Maspes, Fausto Coppi, Tom Simpson, Felice Gimondi, Jacques Anquetil and Eddy Merckx.
According to LaBicycletta.ca, if you want to know if you have an Italian or American Masi built after 1973, it’s all in the numbers. Italian built bikes have the frame size stamped on the bottom bracket and sometimes a matching size stamp and date stamp on the head tube. American made Masi’s have a serial number (with a few exceptions) or a serial number and frame size stamp. All Gran Criteriums built after 1978 are the U.S. made. And today, all frames made by Alberto Masi have his sign.
